Roots of Education 4 Sustainable Development: 17 Romanian volunteers in Togo

Between 15.01-15.03.2013, a group of 17 young Romanian volunteers embarked on a journey to Togo through the Erasmus+ project called "Roots of Education 4 Sustainable Development." This project aimed to promote sustainable development through education and community engagement, leaving a lasting impact on both the volunteers and the local communities in Togo.

Empowering communities through health awareness campaigns

One of the primary goals of the project was to raise awareness about health issues. The volunteers planned and executed a campaign that included public presentations about hygiene & health (to audiences from rural areas, from schools, and from the capital city), workshops (hands-on workshops equiped participants with practical knowledge and skills), and most importantly, group discussions. All these activities have disseminated important information and have fostered a sense of community and shared responsibility for health and well-being.

Non-formal activities and community engagement

The group of volunteers also organized non-formal activities for the local communities. These activities included teaching English language to pupils, through formal and non-formal activities, such as games, art and music.

Conclusion

The project "Roots of Education 4 Sustainable Development" is an example of what can be achieved through passion and commitment to community development. The Romanian volunteers had an impact on the Togolese communities they worked with, and, in turn, the 17 Romanian volunteers gained insights that will definitely shape their personal development and their awareness about life in rural Togo. This Erasmus+ project has planted the seeds of sustainable development and has managed to create roots of friendships and shared goals and aspirations.
